Summer opera, mansions and dinner

This summer’s opera at Sands Point Preserve marks the return of North Shore Music Festival’s production of “Cosi Fan Tutte,” and New Hyde Park caterers Philip Stone Caterers, on July 21.

“Cosi Fan Tutte” (or “A School for Love”) is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s comedy about a pair of young lovers and a test of faithfulness – or lack thereof.

This year, attendees can choose from tickets for both the dinner and opera, or simply the opera.

But those who do opt to include dinner are in for an expansive menu from Philip Stone. It features a salad of watermelon and feta on mixed greens with heirloom tomatoes, Kalamata olives and vanilla balsamic vinaigrette. There are braised ribs, herb-crusted chicken, pasta primavera with roasted summer vegetables and platters of fresh grilled vegetables. And there’s the signature dessert buffet with miniature pastries and fresh fruit.

The dinner is offered at Hempstead House, where Daniel and Florence Guggenheim once entertained the influencers of the day. The opera itself is performed at Castle Gould, built by financier Howard Gould, the son of American railroad developer Jay Gould.

The opera stars Tom Mulder (Fernando), Nicholas LaGesse (Guglielmo), Daniel Klein (Don Alfonso), Melanie Leinbach (Despina), Bonnie Frauenthal (Fiordiligi) and Max Potter (Dorabella).

Nick Gisonde serves as director and Anthony LaGruth as music director and conductor.

“Cosi Fan Tutte” was first performed in 1790 in Austria.
